I was in such a good mood this morning. My op-ed about Brooklyn Queens Day was finally published in the NY Times yesterday, the Steelers a team I have supported for as long as Pittsburgh had been my second home, won the Super Bowl, and the weather was clear and crisp. I strutted into the school, and not even the coverage slip paper-clipped to my timecard could ruin my day. During first period the Art teacher came to my door and asked me to look at a report one of her students (who is also in my CA class) wrote on Roberta Flack. In the first paragraph she describes Flack as, "Urbane." "Do you think she wrote this herself?" The teacher asked me. "No I don't." I said. "By the way, did you read the Times yesterday?" "No actually I didn't. Why?" "No reason." In the afternoon I had a class I have been having trouble with. Mario was in the class today, but for whatever reason he decided to settle down and do his work. It was Carlos, a friend of Mario's, who was giving trouble today. I told him to settle down and do his work, he scowled. I saw a paper airplace launch from somewhere in his area out of the corner of my eye- "Carlos!" I called. "What! I didn't do nothing!" "Then you have nothing to worry about-" "White Bitch," the kid said. What is it with the anti-honky hate speech lately? I sent him out and called the Dean. I wrote up what he said. The Dean came a few minuites later, and luckily he wasn't tired of taking on these violations of my civil rights. He called Carlos's mom, who had been at the school twice last week, and was waiting for her to call back. Mario did all his work. Even asked a kid sitting at his table about how to do the homework. I called him aside at the end of the period and told him I was happy to see this change. "I knew you could do the work if you wanted to. I hope to see the same tomorrow." I was glad I wasn't the only one in a good mood. I wish we all were.
Congrats on the Times. Nicely written.
