Morrisania makes two appearances in the "NYPD Daily Blotter" today: 22 year-old shot in the back at 2:50 pm (that's when school lets out! Thank god it was Sunday!) And a 21 year old shot in the face, apparently following an arguement with the shooter over a woman, also on Sunday, later in the evening. I've been following the Police Blotter for years now, very little "random" violence in this neighborood, mostly arguements that escalate or drug or gang-related.
"Mario" wasn't in school today, but another child, who was Mario's equivalent last year, was. "Billy" (if you knew his real name you'd think it was a very clever psuedonym) ran wild through the school for months, getting into fights every day, multiple times, cursing classmates, teachers, lunch ladies. One teacher's assistant made the mistake of asking Billy for his lunch card. He told her to suck his dick. We tried to get Billy into a special ed. class where he wouldn't be in the hallways as much, and he'd have more personal attention, but his parents wouldn't agree to it. Eventually he ended up in an "alternative-setting," a school for constant behavior problem kids. There he got into more fights, needed a personal para to follow him around, and eventually was kicked out when he brought in a knife.
Billy returned this year, but lasted about three weeks before he was sent back to the "alternative-setting." You can't stay there forever, so today he was sent back to my school. He won't be here long, though. He recieved another suspension while in the "alternative-setting," apparently for hitting a teacher. He'll be in another school, in Brooklyn maybe, next week. He'll be in my classroom tomorrow.
