Somewhere I read, and I just about totally agree, "No one, not even a farmer, works harder than a hard working teacher, but there is no one lazier than a lazy teacher." Does anyone know who to attribute this to?
Everyone knows what the problem is, but no one knows the solution.
A former principal of this school told me that he could easily tell how good a teacher was. He'd walk into their room at the end of the day and look in their trashcan. If the can was full- bad teacher. If the can was empty- good teacher. Need I tell you he had 35+ years in the system? Old fashioned DOE wisdom, there's nothing like it.
This morning I found the UFT newsletter in my mailbox. The subjects under discussion were: "Free Supplies, Letters in Your File, Arrested, Parent/Teacher Conference, and Twilight Zone." Of course you want to know what "Twilight Zone" is all about, here it is:
One of our students was suspended. The students was sent to a suspension site where he/she hit a teacher. The suspension site wants (our school) to file for a suspension.
Another student was sent to the suspension site but does not go. He/She is marked absent and sent back to their school when the suspension is over without further punishment.
Another parent of one of our students admitted that she does not have control, but she keeps on buying and giving.
It's a tough job that we have. That's why we have to be on the same page with our rules."
Everyone knows. No one knows what to do about it.
Billy is gone again, but he might be back in a couple of months. We spent our last 100 minute meeting putting Academic Intervention folders together. The latest plan to combat the worst behaved kids.
Whether it's teachers, students or just cleaning up your house- you have to roll up the rug before you sweep the floor.
